Donating artwork
Donation of works allows START to fundraise. Donated artwork are auctioned annually at the DIFC Gulf Art Fair or bought for a permanent public art for children collection in the Middle East: the first children’s gallery exhibiting a permanent collection of contemporary art around which education programmes can be continuously developed.
Volunteers
START does not have a permanent teaching team instead we champion excellence in arts education with practising artists and arts professionals as our volunteers and ambassadors.
If you have ever wanted to use your skills to fundraise, set-up a workshop or champion an international aid programme, then join START . Your support is integral to our success. You may wish to offer any of the following or you may wish to develop something tailored your skills and available time:
Lecture (45 minutes)
A one off lecture which enables children (and often START student volunteers) to develop their understanding and the power of art today and the context or traditions within which it is made.
Workshop (90 minutes)
Practising artists are asked to volunteer in a way that suits their practice, (eg: a photojournalist would talk about the way in which they source topical ideas and how to use a camera and develop film) children’s workshops are then designed (by START) around each artist’s specialism and time commitments.
In this way architects, curators, designers, draughtsmen, film makers, painters, photographers, print-makers, puppeteers, sculptors can demonstrate, what they do best and with passion.
Where suitable to the artist’s own practice these workshops can become collaborative between children and artist.
Studio visit (2 hours)
A one off studio visit for up to 10 children. Showing how art work is professionally made and including pieces that are currently in progress.
A understanding of the day to day development of art and the inspiration that drives it.
Be an ambassador
Every year START invites 5 Associated Artists / Arts Partners to provide the core of the education programme for that year. To provide stability to the rolling programme of events we ask our ambassadors to work for an accumulated (ie: not necessarily consecutive) 12 week period with children in the Middle East. During thie year the Ambassadors have the opportunity to exhibit as part of START at the DIFC Gulf Art Fair.
Sustainability
Artists can learn immeasurably from sustained exchanges, with children and young people, in terms of their own professional practice and teaching skills.
We can sustain creative partnerships and ensure that the education programmes of START and the artists continue and grow.
